Megan’s Tips:

  • I started reading “Oh Crap!”
    • Didn’t finish
  • Decided she was ready because she follows directions well and picks up on things quickly
  • Got two potties (upstairs and downstairs)
    • Had one out in the open for a while
  • Day 1 we had her half naked
    • Asked if she had to go potty before meals, before activities
    • Have towels and wet vac out and ready
  • Day 2-4
    • She wore underwear
      • We had regular and padded
      • She seemed to have more accidents in the padded underwear because maybe she thought it was a diaper
    • Practiced taking it off
    • She got a sticker for going #1 or #2, 10 stickers got a bigger prize, like a coloring book
      • She also got mini M&M’s in the beginning, but weaned off getting those for a #1
    • Had a couple accidents when she was playing
    • Started telling her it was time to go potty
  • Day 5
    • Seemed to be when it clicked
  • Months later she goes when she needs to
    • Still asks us to wipe and/or pull up her underwear/pants
  • We keep a potty and TP in the car
    • She is currently scared of going on a public toilet because one automatically flushed while she was sitting on it
  • She had a tough time going #2
    • She did it a couple times when we were training and then she stopped
      • Would hold it all morning and only go in her diaper at nap time
      • Started getting rashes, wouldn’t fall asleep
    • I would try to catch her pushing and rush her to the toilet, but it was stressing her out and me out so I stopped
      • One day she just started doing it
      • She will still go in her diaper on occasion

Jess‘ Tips:

  • Tried in February
    • Didn’t go well
    • He didn’t understand, would scream when he was put on the potty
  • Tried again in May and it was almost flawless
    • In between that time, he would get an M&M for sitting on the potty
    • When he started training again, he would get a sticker and an M&M with a big prize (Lightning McQueen car) for filling up the sticker sheet
  • Tips for the moms:
    • Set the bar low (“let’s just try it”)
      • Be patient, cool
    • Expect to sit in the bathroom for 45 minutes
      • Listen to music, read a book to them
      • Bring in a chair for you to sit on
    • Expect for it to be rough
    • Don’t feel badly if you have to take a step back and try again later
  • Neither of us used Pull-Ups
  • Neither of us are attempting nighttime potty training
